Ten years ago, I fell in love with the concept of the Village Movement and was honored to have been a key staff member in the formation and growth of Ashby Village, one of the leading forefront pioneers in the village movement.
At Ashby Village, we recruited and trained an average of one hundred new volunteers each year and achieved a consistent active retention rate of 85% for the last five years. While building a Volunteer Program hailed as one of the best within the village model, I did not just “do” but I carefully tracked “why” some things worked and others did not. I wanted to replicate what was happening and was committed to understanding what was required to attract, motivate, and retain individuals committed to the mission.
In the meantime and throughout my tenure, villages around the country contacted me for advice about their Volunteer Program. I found that recruiting, vetting, retention and policy-making are the prominent concerns of villages. It was a privilege to share best practices and a joy to discover that the techniques and approaches that were so successful at Ashby Village could work well for other villages.
Fast forward to today.
Recently I took a bold step in my professional career by launching my own consulting business to share what I have learned with other non-profits ... more specifically, with other villages. I want to be a resource where they can find support, guidance, and consultation in building dynamic Volunteer Programs of their own.
It may include the challenging task of recruiting volunteers – best places to look, screening volunteers after you have found them, developing a robust training program, or even the daunting shift back to inperson services. Knowing all the “little things” that keep a volunteer pool satisfied, challenged, and coming back is what I understand and know. I also offer a comprehensive assessment of existing programs that you may want to enhance to a new level
